Precision Medicine and African American Health
Precision medicine is an innovative approach to tailoring medical treatment to the individual characteristics of each patient. Its core principles include the consideration of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors to develop personalized care plans. Precision medicine has the potential to address African American health disparities by tailoring treatments to our individual genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. By focusing on our unique characteristics, this approach can improve the effectiveness of treatments for the Black community who have historically been disadvantaged in healthcare.
PRECISION MEDICINE FOR THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY
Precision medicine can help identify and correct the root causes of many health disparities. For instance, precision medicine initiatives have successfully identified genetic markers that predispose African Americans to certain conditions, such as salt sensitivity, hypertension, kidney failure, and diabetes. This has led to more effective and targeted treatments. Another example is the development of personalized cancer therapies that consider the unique genetic makeup of African American patients, resulting in improved survival rates. It has also been shown that certain chemotherapies have variable toxicities that can be related to race.
PRECISION ADVICE ABOUT CALCIUM
Calcium has been proposed as a trigger for prostate and lung cancer uniquely in African American men, and it has been suggested that Black women may have an increased risk for hormone-negative breast cancer through calcium intake. THIS IS PRECISION MEDICINE. Tailoring both your treatment and advice based on research outcomes. Have you ever been told to avoid calcium? If not, you have not received tailored advice based on research. Since most African Americans are a mixture of European and African genetics, you may require calcium supplements, so don't universally avoid them . . . and don't assume calcium is "just a harmless supplement."
SICKLE CELL ANEMIA HAS A PRECISION-DEVELOPED CURE
Precision medicine has helped create targeted interventions for sickle cell anemia that have the potential to provide a permanent cure.
